This past weekend I had the opportunity to volunteer at a superhero-themed 5k to benefit a child abuse prevention charity. (My mother actually ran the thing; I’m a wimp, so I helped with water distribution at the start/finish line.) I jumped at the opportunity to get the ol’ Teen Titans Raven costume out of the closet.
I only have one photograph from the race, but I think it is now the nerdiest photograph I own. I don’t know why there was a stormtrooper and a sandtrooper there, but I’m not complaining. My mother and I were watching the awards, and they sneaked up and flanked us. She was like: “Woah!! Where’d you come from?” And I was like: “Yea!! You guys are awesome! Can I have a picture?” And they were very polite.
I signed up for the costume contest but then missed the adult portion, so I don’t know if I make a prize-winning Raven or not. A few people took photos of me, and I got photographed/interviewed by a journalism student, which was cool. Normally the reaction was just “…wow.” Except for the children, who did a lot of wide-eyed staring. I’m guessing that they actually recognized the character from watching the Teen Titans cartoon and most of the adults did not. My fellow beverage-handler much enjoyed the children’s reactions. All the volunteers I was with thought the wig was my real hair, which I’m hoping means I did a good job cutting/styling/securing it.
And then we went to Starbucks.
Now, to the title of this post—my Finrod ears are here! I popped one on sans glue or makeup along with the Raven costume as the Raven wig hides the seams better than my real hair.
I love these ears. They’re absolutely gorgeous. They’ll probably be a bit longer when I glue them on instead of just sticking them over my real ears.
I’ve finished just about all the bits of my pirate costume and my Finrod costume that require machine sewing. The rest of it will have to be done by hand. I’ve pinned the Celtic knot pattern onto the back of the Finrod outer robe—it looks wonky because I had to do it with safety pins. (This fabric doesn’t take too terribly kindly to straight pins.) I’ll have to be careful to sew straight, but I’m sure I can do it.
